Finally

So, if you have been following the side of my blog, I have been preparing to start a new craft project. I say preparing because I have been wanting to do this for a long time, but I am so useless with crafts lately that I have just been stock-piling the objects needed in hopes that I will start the actual craft soon. Did that make sense. I don't feel well today, so excuse my confusing blogging.

Anyway, I am actually ready to start this awesome project now! I have everything I need, I just need to put them all together. I hope it happens before Christmas.

If you insist on announcing to the whole world how many kids you have on the back of your mini-van, for heaven's sake, please do not include their names too.

There are no blue foods

While eating some strangely delicious Wild Berry Skittles I started to ponder the fate of the raspberry. How did it end up blue? I know, there are lots of red fruits, but who decided it was the raspberry that would be shucked of its identifying color and reallocated to blue?

But that's the way it is now. When you see a blue candy, you think two things: Its either cotton candy, or blue raspberry. And for some reason Blue Raspberry is always a slightly different flavor than Regular Raspberry would be. Has anyone ever had a blue raspberry candy that tasted like a real raspberry? Yes, I know, the strawberry and cherry ones don't usually taste right either, but you get my point.

Does anyone know why/when this happened? Could we just have easily have been eating Blue Strawberry candy?

Can you catch the Flu from money?

With all the talk of what a horrible flu season we will have this year, we (at work) have done some research on ways you can get the flu and some ways to prevent it. And (surprise) the prevention methods are very simple. It will help keep the spread of the flu down, and hopefully stop it from being a pandemic if we can all do these things everyday.

First, an interesting article about catching the flu from money, something I come in contact with everyday.

To reduce the risk of catching the flu, wash your hands frequently and use tissues when you sneeze -- those are the recommendations from the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But there's another way to protect yourself, even if it's not so good for the economy: Stop handling money.

It doesn't get talked about much, but paper currency -- the dollars, fives, 10s and 20s most people routinely touch every day -- can spread viruses from one person to another. So if you have contact with money that an infected individual has also handled, there's a possibility of catching the flu.

How likely is that? Despite the pervasiveness of cash in society, its role in transmitting illness has been the subject of surprisingly little study. But some recent research suggests that flu bugs can show some staying power when they land on one of the countless bank notes that change hands every day.

Generally speaking, scientists interviewed by SmartMoney estimate the lifetime of a plain flu virus deposited on money at an hour or so. But mix in some human nasal mucus, and the potential for the virus to hang on long enough to find a victim increases, according to one of the few scientific studies done on flu transmission through cash.

In a study conducted at Switzerland's Central Laboratory of Virology at the University Hospitals of Geneva, researchers tested to see what would happen when flu virus was placed on Swiss franc notes. In some of these tests, researchers placed flu virus mixed in with nasal secretions from children on bank notes and saw some unexpected results.

When protected by human mucus, the flu cells were much hardier, lasting up to 17 days on the franc notes. The virus that persisted for 17 days was a form of influenza A called H3N2. In an e-mail interview, Dr. Yves Thomas said samples of an influenza A strain called H1N1 also endured for quite a bit -- in some cases, up to 10 days. That bug was similar but not identical to the virus at the center of the current swine flu outbreak, which is considered a new strain of H1N1.

The research suggested that in the real world, where runny noses get wiped by hands that then handle money, flu viruses may have more persistence than previously thought. (Read the study "Survival of Influenza Virus on Banknotes" in the May 2008 issue of the journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology.)

To be sure, many kinds of frequently touched surfaces could temporarily harbor the flu virus. Broadly speaking, scientists consider the risk of transmission in this way to be low, particularly if hand washing and other hygiene measures are practiced, says Dr. Philip Tierno, the director of clinical microbiology and immunology at New York University's Langone Medical Center and author of "The Secret Life of Germs."

How you'd catch it

Three things likely must happen for a flu virus to be transmitted from one person to another via paper money:
* First, a person who is infected with the flu must sneeze or cough onto the bill or blow his/her nose and leave remnants of mucus on the currency.
* Next, an uninfected person needs to touch the money while the virus is still present. Finally, that person needs to put his (or her) contaminated hand in his mouth or pick his nose, says Dr. Murray Grossan, an otolaryngologist at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Next are the preventions:

Swine Flu Prevention....
The only portals of entry are the nostrils and mouth/throat.. In a global epidemic of this nature, it's almost impossible to avoid coming into contact with H1N1 in spite of all precautions. Contact with H1N1 is not so much of a problem as proliferation is.

While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of H1N1 infection, in order to prevent proliferation, aggravation of symptoms and development of secondary infections, some very simple steps, not fully highlighted in most official communications, can be practiced (instead of focusing on how to sto ck N95 or Tamiflu):

1. Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all official communications).

2. "Hands-off-the-face" approach. Resist all temptations to touch any part of face (unless you want to eat, bathe or slap).

3. *Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if you don't trust salt). *H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/ nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected one.
Don't underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method.

4. Similar to 3 above, *clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water . *Not everybody may be good at Jala Neti or Sutra Neti (very good Yoga asanas to clean nasal cavities), but *blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population.* Neti pots and sinus rinse kits are available at the drug store and relatively inexpensiveS.under $15.

5. *Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C (Amla and other citrus fruits). *If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption.

6. *Drink as much of warm liquids (tea, coffee, etc) as you can. *Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction.
They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm.

Come on down!!

I love The Price Is Right. It is a great show. And even though Nik would disagree, I think it is just as good with Drew Carey. Maybe even better. Bob was getting bitter.

Anyway.

I got to watch some of it this morning before work (not something I normally get to do) and I realized something...........I like it when people lose. It gives me great pleasure when someone (usually wearing a shirt that says something like "Pick me I'm Spayed!") is so confident that that is exactly where those numbers go, and they are totally going to win that set of luggage and the leaf blower, only to have their dreams smashed against the stage when hear that buzzer. No numbers right. MWAHAHAHAHAAAA!!!!

I don't know why that is so fun, but it is. And don't get me wrong, I like to see them win too. Usually the ones close to my age, or the little old ladies that remind me of my Grandma Great. Who was a total pro at all the games, and would have won the whole kit and caboodle, had she ever had the chance to play. In fact, I may now be able to trace this whole thing back to Grandma. She used to tend me when I was very little, and we watched The Price Is Right every morning. Did she like to see them lose? Probably not. She was a nice lady. She wanted them to win I am sure.

Maybe I am just jealous. I would love to have that Toyota Corolla, or the his and hers mountain bikes, or the thousands of dollars up for grabs on Plinko.

I can pass on the oriental rug though. Thanks.

Thanks for playing, and remember, have your pets spayed or neutered!!

New Moon Wishes, A year later

This has nothing to do with Twilight.

If you aren't familiar, the moon is considered "new" when it is not visible in the sky. It happens about 2 weeks after the full moon.

This is important in many aspects of astrology and brings with it a lot of exceptions for a new start. It would make sense that if you are waiting to make a big change in your life (or even a small change) that you would coordinate it with the new moon. And because of that, every month my mother-in-law brings us some information about what makes each particular month different. It depends on which astrological sign it happens in and such. You use this information to plan out your 10 New Moon Wishes. These are aspirations that are carefully worded to insure good and positive things happen during this moon cycle. Here are some examples:

* I want to easily find myself filled with love and compassion for....
* I want to find any misplaced or unnecessary feelings towards ___ taken from me....
* I want to easily attract and befriend those who can...

Get it?

Ok, so here's the reason for the post. The new moon is coming up soon and I have been neglecting writing my wishes for quite some time. The first time I was given the information, I wrote my list and didn't know what to do with it, so I folded it up and put it in my wallet. And forgot about it. I think I thought it was something else, cause I have cleaned out my wallet quite a few times since then...anyway, today I found the list and it is dated 9-28-08. A whole year ago! So, I know what you are all asking, "Well, did you fulfill your wishes?" And I am here to tell you that I did! Well, at least some of them. I wrote down 8 wishes and about 6 of them are at least mostly fulfilled. One was health related, two were about me and Nik, one was about money, and the rest were just about me and my life.

I like this idea cause it goes right along with my new goal to only put positive vibes out into the universe. I guess its like Karma, you get what you give. If I put positive thoughts out, I will get goodness back to me. Now, I know I can't be Little Miss Sunshine all the live long day, but I will do my best to speak well of people, especially myself, my situation, and everything I have power over.

If you feel so inclined, please join me this month and write your own New Moon Wishes!

It's come to this.

(ps- I don't have this many clothes, but that would be nice.)

Ok guys. I've reached the end.

I can't stand my wardrobe anymore. Except my Maleficent shirt, I love that one. Almost everything else I am bored with. I need some new clothes. But I obviously can't afford to get rid of it all and start completely over. So here it is, my one and only plea, if you have a reason to get me a gift, let it be clothes. Or a gift card to a place that sells clothes. I need help.

Also, if you know someone that is my size, let me know, I would love to pass my clothes on to someone who needs them.

Also #2, if you hear of a place that is having a good sale on clothes, I want to hear about it. Saving money makes me happy.

PUMPKINS!!!

Oh. My. Gosh. Those pumpkins were amazing! I would have bought them all! If it weren't for the lack of money and space. But Nik told me that when we have a house I can grow them. So that was good.

Last night Nik and I picked out some pumpkins to carve and I could have slept in the display. They were all so beautiful! I think Nik was a little scared for his wife's sanity by the time we left, but I just couldn't help it. And yes, I came home and took pictures of them. Not amazing ones, but documentation none the less. Also, they will be carved tonight so I will have more pictures then. I am so excited!
